Educating the public about sustainability and helping people to develop environmental and sustainable skills is an important step in the movement towards a more environmentally friendly future. For the past 3 years, Dorset Community Association together with da21 has worked on a project ‘Communities Living Sustainably’, funded entirely by the National Lottery. A skills base on energy use and food production is now available but regrettably all funding has now come to an end and further funding needs to be found.
There are initiatives already in progress within the county as regards, food, energy, housing, transport, woodland working and waste resources. The message here is that there is a limit as to what can be expected from public authority effort so the importance of individual and community activity cannot be emphasised too much.
