Douglas Pigg of the Dorset & East Devon National Park Team, will be presenting an illustrated talk on an exciting proposal to create a large National Park across Dorset and East Devon, which will protect and enhance our countryside and heritage, and boost the economic and social welfare of our communities. This project, for which core funding will be provided by central government, has already passed an initial evaluation and is currently awaiting further assessment by Natural England.

After our current Local Government Reorganisation, the new Dorset National Park promises to be an asset and close partner for the new “shire” unitary Dorset Council, working on a shared agenda for thriving and successful communities and rural economy, as well as to look after the environment, biodiversity and heritage, and bringing additional resources to help support local services.

Dorset could in fact become England’s first National Park to have both an extensive coast-line and an offshore role, in partnership with relevant stakeholders including National Coastwatch. The Dorset National Park Team [a Community Interest Company] is a full member of the Dorset Coastal Forum. The Marine Conservation Society, Dorset Wildlife Trust, the National Trust in Wessex and many other organisations are very supportive of the proposal, and we are in touch with and briefing the National Sailing Academy, the RYA and other stakeholders.
