RESURGENCE & ECOLOGIST READERS’ GROUP
Please join us for a special Saturday meetup at Hilfield Friary, discussing Resurgence & Ecologist articles on the environment, social justice & ethical living during the morning, then in the afternoon we will have the great pleasure of a talk by Satish Kumar, the eminent peace and environmental activist, Editor Emeritus of the Resurgence & Ecologist magazine, and author of many books including his latest, ‘Soil, Soul, Society‘.
You are welcome to come toeither the afternoon talk from 2pm, or to the whole day including article discussions in the morning.
Satish Kumar is an internationally renowned speaker and author on ecological and spiritual issues. When he was only 9 years old, Satish joined the wandering brotherhood of Jain monks. When he left the monastic order he became a campaigner for land reform, working to turn Gandhi’s vision of a peaceful world into reality, before undertaking an 8,000 mile peace pilgrimage, walking from India to America without any money, through deserts, mountains, storms and snow.
Over the years, Satish has contributed to Radio 4’s Thought for the Day and has appeared as a guest on Desert Island Discs. He featured in BBC2’s Natural World Series — Earth Pilgrim: A Spiritual Journey into the Landscape of Dartmoor. The important message of his latest book is: “We are all members of a one-earth society, and caring for the earth and soul is interrelated”.
In Soil, Soul & Society, Satish presents the new trinity for our age of sustainability. One that shares the knowledge that we ourselves are very much part of nature; that what we do to nature we in fact do to ourselves; and that the earth is soulful. In this book, he inspires readers with the knowledge we are all leaders and can create change. He urges readers to create a new consciousness that reveres nature and explores how, as a global society, we need to embrace diversity and become pilgrims on this earth not tourists. To bring about change in the world we must be the change we wish to see.
If you plan to join us for the whole day, please bring with you a contribution towards a shared lunch – preferably 100% plant-based, if possible, as Satish is invited to join us for lunch, and he is a lifelong vegetarian, and may be vegan.
The event will be on a free entry basis, but a donation of at least £7 each would be appreciated so that we can cover Satish’s travelling expenses from NW Devon, as he is coming specially just to see us. Hot drinks and biscuits will be provided.
