Bournemouth is an award-winning location, having a long history of excellence for its parks, gardens and beaches. This continues to develop and include more aspects of sustainability, such as countryside management, waste and recycling and carbon reduction.
Bournemouth Borough Council is the Unitary Authority for the coastal town of Bournemouth. It counts among its priorities ‘Providing high quality infrastructure for residents, businesses and visitors while protecting and enhancing our beautiful environment’
Bournemouth’s carbon reduction activities currently place it in the top 25% of ‘nearest neighbour’ authorities and saw it named ‘Greenest City’ in the 2013 UK Vitality Index.
To help improve further, the Council has joined the Compact of Mayors – the world’s largest coalition of leaders addressing climate change by pledging to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and tracking progress. In 2016 Bournemouth achieved the highest standard of Compact of Mayors membership, becoming only the third UK council to become ‘compliant’ with all requirements. This will help Bournemouth become a ‘Green Economy Leader’ – a town at the cutting edge of environmental protection, using the high-quality environment to attract business talent and inward investment.
Bournemouth is also an Earth Charter town, Fairtrade Town and (with its neighbour Poole) a Sustainable Food City and World’s first Sustainable Fish City.
