The Sustainable Schools work at Dorset County Council builds on the foundations laid by the Communities Living Sustainably in Dorset project, which helped 10 outstanding schools in West Dorset to achieve the international Eco-Schools Green Flag Award. Based in Dorset County Council’s Community Energy Team, the Sustainable Schools support seeks to cultivate a network of schools that are actively learning about and practising sustainability. We primarily use the Eco-Schools awards scheme to guide schools through the process of auditing the school’s environmental performance, planning pupil-led action and linking environmental work to the curriculum. Key activities include school visits, advice and signposting, setting up mentoring relationships between Eco-schools, and running termly projects.
